Current whereabouts/wellbeing: Deceased Last words: Below Sangay Dolma, a nun, passed away in her self-immolation protest in front of the Chinese government office in Dokarmo town of Tsekhog, Malho, Eastern Tibet. The exact time of her self-immolation protest could not be ascertained immediately. Sangay Dolma’s nunnery is located near Sangag Mindrol Dhargeyling Monastery. According to various sources, a large number of local Tibetans gathered to carry out the last rites for Sangay Dolma.

Prayers were also carried out at the deceased’s nunnery. She left behind the following message in poem-prose: Look into the deep blue sky above my lama has returned into the tent with white rock steps look, my Tibetan brothers and sisters look at the peak of that snow mountain the white snow lion has returned look, my Tibetan brothers and sisters look at the fortress in the forest look at the beauty of the turquoise plain my tigress has come back look, my Tibetan brothers and sisters look at the land of snow our destiny is on the rise Tibet is an independent country. Twenty-nine-year-old Tamdrin Dorjee set himself on fire on 23 November near the entrance of the local Chinese administrative offices of Dokarmo town in Tsekhog region of Malho. He died at the scene of his actions. According to sources, Tamdrin was seen with his hands clasped together in prayer shouting as the flames raged around him.

As Tamdrin had self-immolated late in previous night near the Luchu River, no one had witnessed his action. Tibetans brought his dead body back to his home where many gathered to offer prayers and pay their respects. A former monk of Shitsang Monastery, Tamdrin had disrobed in 2007 to help his nomadic family. A source reported that Tamdrin often stated that without the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet, there is “no difference between living and dying in this world.”

Tibetans defied official warnings and took his body to perform prayers and rituals near Dowa monastery where monks conducted the last rites at a nearby crematorium. Tsering Dhondup set himself on fire at Gyagar Thang near the entrance to a mining site in Amchok region of Labrang Sangchu, Eastern Tibet. His action was an apparent protest against China’s continuing occupation of Tibet. Tsering Dhondup succumbed to his injuries at the site of his protest. He is survived by his wife, Tamding Tso, their three children, and his parents, Lubhum Gyal and Drukmo Tso.

Wangchen Norbu set himself ablaze in the evening of 19 November near the Kangtsa Gaden Choephel Ling Monastery raising slogans demanding the return of HH the Dalai Lama from exile, the release of the Eleventh Panchen Lama and freedom for Tibet. Wangchen reportedly passed away at the site of his protest. Tibetans carried his charred body inside the monastery where a large number of monks and local people gathered to offer prayers and their profound respects until late in the night. His cremation began at 10:30 pm that evening. Wangchen Norbu is the son of Khando Tso and the late Tenzin

Sangdag Tsering set himself on fire at 7 pm in front of the Chinese administration offices in Dokarmo Town, Rebkong County. According to sources, earlier that day Chinese authorities had called a large meeting of local Tibetans during which they issued strict orders barring everyone from visiting families of self-immolators to pay their respects and condolences. They also warned that monasteries would be forced to shut down if they did not follow the decree. Sangdag Tsering strategically chose the site of his self-immolation at the very place where the meeting had been held earlier. Chinese security personnel arrived at the scene and tried to douse the flames but Sangdag Tsering succumbed to his injuries. Thousands of Tibetans and monks from two close-by monasteries gathered at the protest site and carried his body to the Gonshul Sangag Mindrol Dhargeyling to perform his cremation services. According to the same source, Sangdag had in recent times repeatedly expressed his frustration over the lack of freedom in Tibet, His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s absence, and the continuing wave of self-immolations in Tibet. About a week prior to his protest, he had written a short poem espousing loyalty to Tibet and sent it to a friend. The last two lines of the poem written in Tibetan reads: “The brave men of the snow mountains, Don’t forget your loyalty to Tibet.” Sangdag Tsering is survived by his parents, his wife Phagmo Tso, 24, and their son.

Mother of two, Chagmo Kyi self-immolated in Dolma Square, Rebkong. She was a native of Rebkong Meypa Khagya village in Eastern Tibet and passed away at the site of her protest. Her body was later taken to Rongwo Monastery where thousands of Tibetans reportedly gathered to offer prayers and their respects. According to the Dharamshala-based human rights NGO, Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD), “At around 7 pm (local time), Kyi’s body was moved to a cremation site on a nearby hill behind Rongwo Monastery. At the cremation site, a large number of Tibetans were loudly reciting mani mantras and special prayers associated with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Monks were carrying out preparations to cremate the body.” Despite the reportedly large deployment of Chinese armed forces in the region, and restrictions of movement on local Tibetans, hundreds of Tibetan — monks and lay people — gathered to mark Chagmo Kyi’s demise and offer prayers during her cremation which took place at a site normally reserved for monks and lamas. Troops surrounded the gathering. According to sources with contacts in Rebkong, the young mother had left letters written in Chinese and in Tibetan before her self-immolation at the Dolma grounds on Saturday. In her letters, Chagmo Kyi expressed her wish for the equality of all nationalities and called on the new Chinese leader Xi Jinping to meet with the Dalai Lama.
