On 4 August 2026, Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) President Mr. Tsering Chomphel, accompanied by former TYC Centrex General Secretary Tashi Lamsang la, former Regional Tibetan Youth Congress New York & New Jersey International Relations Secretary Nordon la, and Tibetan Community of New York & New Jersey (TCNYNJ) President Sonam Topden la, held an advocacy meeting with Congresswoman Grace Meng. The meeting was coordinated by Tseyang la.

During the meeting, the delegation briefed Congresswoman Grace Meng on the current situation in Tibet and the ongoing human rights violations faced by the Tibetan people under the policies of the Chinese government. Particular attention was given to the self-immolation of Pawo Lobga Rangzen in front of the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The delegation provided information on his sacrifice and emphasized its significance as an act intended to draw international attention to the Tibetan freedom struggle and the aspiration for Tibet’s independence.

The delegation also raised serious concerns over the deteriorating human rights situation in Tibet and China’s recently enacted so-called “Ethnic Unity Law,” which threatens to accelerate the forced assimilation of Tibetans and undermine Tibet’s distinct national identity. The delegation emphasized the urgent need to protect Tibet’s unique language, culture, religion, and national identity, while calling for greater international attention and support for the legitimate aspirations, fundamental rights, and freedom of the Tibetan people.

The advocacy meeting concluded with a meaningful exchange and reaffirmed the importance of continued dialogue and international engagement on the Tibetan issue.
