On 2 September 2026, the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress (RTYC) New York & New Jersey organized a program to commemorate Tibetan Democracy Day, with Mr. Tsering Chomphel, President of the Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC), as the Chief Guest. In his address, President Tsering Chomphel emphasized that the Tibetan people are fortunate to have received the precious gift of democracy from His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. He highlighted the remarkable journey of the Tibetan community in exile in establishing and sustaining a functioning democratic system based on the three pillars of democracy, and stressed the importance of preserving and further strengthening this democratic tradition for future generations.
He reminded the gathering that democracy carries both rights and responsibilities, and that every Tibetan has an important role to play in protecting, participating in, and strengthening democratic institutions. He encouraged the community, particularly the younger generation, to actively engage in democratic processes and uphold the values that have sustained the Tibetan democratic system in exile.
The program concluded with a warm community gathering and dinner, bringing Tibetans together in a spirit of unity, gratitude, and celebration, while reflecting on the importance of democracy and the responsibility of carrying its values forward.
