Delhi, Dec 23 – Tibetan youth from India and Nepal have gathered in the Indian capital of Delhi to take part in the Tibetan Youth Leadership Training Program organized by Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC), the largest Tibetan NGO in exile.

This program held every year is the 15^th leadership training in its series and is geared specifically and open for all Tibetan youth. Over the years TYC has proven to be valuable training ground for Tibetans living in exile and many of today’s leaders in the Tibetan diaspora, including the Tibetan Political Leader (Sikyong) Lobsang Sangay once served as a member of TYC at its headquarters in Dharamsala India. Today, one can observe that several Ministers (Kalon) and Members of Parliament (Chitue) in the Central Tibetan Administration as well as leaders in various capacities in exile once served as a member of TYC. Therefore, TYC has shown to be an exceptional organization in strengthening the Tibetan movement, the community and the freedom struggle.

This week’s leadership training started with an opening ceremony that included a talk by journalist, photographer, writer and a long time supporter of Tibet Mr. Vijay Kranti, Tibetan MP Chitue Karma Yeshi and Tibetan MP Chitue Acharya Yeshi Phuntsok. Local representatives of the Central Tibetan Administration also attended the morning’s program. In his opening remarks, President of Tibetan Youth Congress Tenzing Jigme stressed the importance of the youth taking responsibility of our movement.

This years training will include workshops on the structure of the Central Tibetan Administration facilitated by MP Pema Jugney and Democracy in exile facilitated by MP Karma Yeshi. Students will also learn to interact with news reporters, the importance of social media in today’s world and lobby training. “The idea is to empower our youth so that so that they can go on to make positive differences in our community, our struggle and the world,” said Ngawang Lobsang, Joint Secretary of TYC.

The Tibetan Youth Leadership is being held at the Tibetan Children Village hostel in Delhi and will go on from Dec 23-27.

Kuala Lampur Dec 22 – Political and Youth organization members of International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) Asia Pacific committee gathered in Kuala Lampur Malaysia for a three-day conference from Dec 18-21. This meeting was hosted by Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Malaysia), and attended by Young Progressives for Social Democracy (Thailand), Social Democratic Party (Japan), Student Council Alliance for Philippines, Akbayan Youth (Philippines), Nepali Students Union (Nepal), Voters Party (India), Pergarakan Indonesia (Indonesia) and Young Labor Party (New Zealand). Tenzing Jigme President of Tibetan Youth Congress, the largest pro independence Tibetan NGO in exile is attending this three-day conference. The topic for this year’s conference is ‘Green Governance: the urgent task of climate change mitigation and adaptation’.

Speaking at the conference, Jigme talked about the environmental destruction inside Tibet and its affects on South East Asian nations, the current critical situation inside the Tibet, and the self-immolations. A resolution to stand in solidarity with the self-immolators and condemn China’s illegal occupation of Tibet was unanimously adopted at the Congress. The committee also passed resolutions showing solidarity with the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong and condemned the recent terrorist act in Pakistan where over 145 innocent people including children’s lives were lost.  “I think it is important to support peace and independence for Tibetan people at this crucial point in time”, says Japanese delegate Junya Arita.

TYC President Jigme stated that he views this moment as an opportunity to speak for Tibet and to network and reach out to build a coalition of like minded groups and governments who have issues with China and see how we can work together to hold them accountable for their actions in the region. “Many of these south east nations are constantly ‘harassed’ and ‘bullied’ by China. It is time we all stand together and put a stop to that,” he added.

IUSY was founded in 1907 and is the largest international political youth organization in the world with about 150 member organizations from more than 100 countries fighting for democratic socialism, freedom, human rights, equality, democracy and international solidarity.

Democracy in Exile: Challenges facing the Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) and the Tibetan Freedom Struggle, was the topic of the speaking tour that TYC President Tenzing Jigme just concluded in Europe. Covering five nations in about two weeks, Jigme spoke to the youth and members of the Tibetan communities in London, Switzerland, Belgium, France and Spain. He also met with representatives and Parliament members of United Kingdom, France and Spain during this visit. The aim of this trip was firstly to hear thoughts, concerns and suggestions for TYC and the Tibetan movement from Tibetans living in Europe and; secondly, to meet with Tibetan Youth Congress regional chapters and their members; and thirdly, to lobby Tibet supporters and leaders of different countries for their support towards our cause.

President Jigme also attended the Tibet Support Group (TSG) meeting in London organized by International Tibet Network. TYC acknowledges the great activities TSG’s perform for our cause and hopes to see that continue in the future.

In London, an informal discussion/talk was organized by the Tibetan Association of UK at a local Tibetan owned establishment known as Kailash Momo restaurant. The event in Switzerland was organized by Tibetan Youth Association of Europe, while the talks in Belgium and France was organized by the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress chapters in the two regions. The Tibetan Community Association of Spain organized the event in Barcelona along with the support of Casa del Tibet Foundation. Successful meetings with Members of Parliaments were also held, namely, with Mr. Fabian Hamilton MP Labor Party UK, Mr Andre Gattoloni MP France, Spanish Senator Mr. Josep Maldonado and Greek Consulate General Fernando Turro. In these meetings, Jigme addressed about the current situation inside Tibet and urged the honorable MPs to do everything they could in their capacities to resolve the issue of Tibet. The leaders also appreciated the work TYC has been doing for Tibet over the years and wished TYC all the best in future campaigns.

On this tour, TYC President spoke about the challenges facing Tibetan Youth Congress, the aims and objectives of the organization and the importance of keeping the struggle for independence alive. He also touched upon the importance of understanding that we are a young democracy and our politics is new. With that in mind, it is important to respect each other’s views and have room for healthy debates. Question and Answer sessions were allotted after every talk where members of the community asked questions on various topics ranging from TYC’s stance for Independence, to questions regarding the direction of our movement. “The talks were very well received by the audiences and I hope most people now understand the reasons and the need for us to continue our struggle for the freedom and independence for the Tibetan people while respecting contrasting views,” said TYC President Tenzing Jigme. Donations were also made to TYC and TYC truly appreciates all those that made contributions to the organization so that we can continue to our efforts for Tibet until Tibet is free.

TYC Announces 15th Annual Tibetan Youth Leadership Training Program 2014

Dharamsala, Oct 29 – Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC), the largest Tibetan NGO in exile announces its 15th Annual Tibetan Youth Leadership Program. TYC serves as a valuable training ground for the future leaders of the Tibetan people. With eighty-eight regional chapters and over thirty five thousand members worldwide, TYC is able to reach a majority of exile Tibetan communities providing civil education for the public at large and conduct leadership training for Tibetan youth and adults. Tibetan Youth Congress has been one of the most important resources for educating Tibetans about democratic systems and Youth Leadership.

The Youth Leadership Training program is a regular feature of Tibetan Youth Congress. TYC has been organizing Youth Leadership Training program for the past 14 years. Last year, the Tibetan Youth Leadership Training Program was held in Bangalore with over 60 participants in attendance. This year more than 100 college students from India, Nepal and Bhutan are expected to participate in this training. The majority of the participants will be from various regional TYC chapters and major universities/ colleges in India. “The youth of today are the future of tomorrow and so it is important for us to train our youth so that they become better leaders and make our movement stronger”, says TYC Vice President Tamdin Hrichoe.

The aim of this training is to empower our Tibetan youth with leadership skills and experiences for the future of Tibet and the Tibetan people. Some of the workshops facilitated at this years training will be on, “How be become an effective leader”, “Power of Social Media”, “Democracy in Exile” and “Role and Responsibility of Youth in our movement”. This year’s training program will be held in Rohini Tibetan Youth Hostel from 23rd to 27th December 2014. Deadline to register for the conference is Nov 20.
