5 September 2026, New York — The 9th Edition of The Dalai Lama Cup Football Tournament, organized by the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress (RTYC) New York & New Jersey, was inaugurated today in a spirit of unity, sportsmanship, friendship, and Tibetan national pride.

The Dalai Lama Cup is more than a sporting event; it is organized as a tribute of gratitude and appreciation to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama for his lifelong leadership, dedication, and tireless service to the Tibetan people and the Tibetan freedom movement. The tournament provides a meaningful platform for Tibetan youth to come together while expressing their deep respect and gratitude for His Holiness’s enduring contribution to the preservation of Tibetan identity, culture, and national aspirations.

The Chief Guest, Mr. Tsering Chomphel la, President of the Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC), graced the auspicious opening ceremony and delivered the opening remarks. He emphasized the vital role of Tibetan youth in preserving and strengthening Tibetan nationalism, patriotism, unity, and a sense of responsibility toward the Tibetan cause.

President Tsering Chomphel la encouraged the young participants to recognize that sports are not only about physical fitness and competition, but also about cultivating discipline, teamwork, friendship, leadership, solidarity, and a strong sense of national identity. He further expressed his appreciation to RTYC New York & New Jersey for organizing the 9th edition of The Dalai Lama Cup and for creating a valuable platform that brings Tibetan youth together through sports and strengthens bonds of friendship and national solidarity.

The Tibetan Youth Congress extends its best wishes to all eight participating teams and hopes that the tournament will continue in the true spirit of friendship, fair play, unity, and Tibetan national pride. Beyond the field of competition, may the tournament inspire Tibetan youth to remain connected, united, and committed to preserving the identity and aspirations of the Tibetan people.
