Nyingchag Bum, the oldest of three brothers, self-immolated and died early in the evening of 12 November in in front of a Chinese government office building. Thousands of Tibetans congregated in the town and prevented the police from taking away his body. They carried his body to Dowa Monastery for prayer service. According sources, Nyingchag Bum’s self-immolation was witnessed by hundreds of locals who then remained at the spot to pray for the long life of the Dalai Lama. In response, a large contingent of armed paramilitary forces was reportedly deployed near Dowa Township, about 100 kms from Rebkong County.
