[New Delhi: 12th March, 2009]

To commemorate the 50th Tibetan Women's Uprising Day, Tibetan Youth Congress organised a peaceful protest rally to protest against China's illegal occupation of Tibet and to pay tribute to the women martyrs of Tibet who have sacrificed their precious lives for the Tibetan people's struggle for Independence. On this historic day in 1959 over 15,000 Tibetan women started the women's revolution against the Chinese occupation of Tibet after the brutal suppression of the March 10th, 1959 uprising.

We pay tribute to the brave and courageous Tibetan women like Kunsang la, Ani Pachen and Ama Adhe who refused to bow down to the oppression of the Chinese forces. We also pay our respects to the younger generation of Tibetan women like Ani Ngawang Sangdrol and Phuntsok Nyidrol, born and raised inside Tibet under the Red Communist China who suffered long terms of imprisonment and torture for their protests in Lhasa demanding Tibet's independence in 1987,88 & 89.

The protest rally started from Khan Market at 10.30am and from there the protesters headed towards the United Nation Information Centre, New Delhi. More than 120 Tibetans from TYC's Northern Chapter and women from RTYC Samyeling and Rohini participated in the protest.

TYC's Organisational Secretary Tenzing Yangzom along with an elderly Tibetan women and a nun protestor submitted the memorandum on behalf of the 6 million Tibetans. They met with Mr. Rajiv Chandran, National Information Officer of UN and expressed to them their concerns of the critical situation of Tibetans Women inside Tibet. After discussing for more than half hour, Mr. Rajiv Chandran assured Ms. Yangzom that he will submit the memorandum to the main UN office and will take all the necessary action to raise the issue inside the UN. The protest at the UN Information Centre concluded with a 2 minute silence in remembrance of the sacrifices made by Tibetan women, the singing of the Tibetan and Indian National Anthem and with a pledge to continue our struggle for the Tibet.

On the same day, the chain hunger strike led by the young Tibetans for 50 hours, 50 minutes, and 50 seconds with a pledge on the 50th Tibetan National Uprising day to shoulder their responsibility to struggle for Tibet's Independence was concluded and a second batch of hunger strikers led by 17 Tibetans above 50 years began their hunger strike.
